Atlantic immigration rates

A record number of immigrants came to Atlantic Canada in the first nine months of last year, in part because of the Syrian refugees; but the problem is many immigrants don’t stay.

A report from APEC shows 11,600 immigrants arrived in the four Atlantic provinces because of expanded provincial nominee programs.

But author David Chaundy says retention rates are low and processing times are too long.

Cape Breton jewel theft

A 29 year old Sydney Mines man is charged with a jewel heist at London Jewellers on Charlotte Street.  A ring worth $4,000 was stolen December 27th.

Edward Joseph Thomas Whitty was in court yesterday on charges of theft and breaching conditions.
