Funerals for a Nova Scotia murder-suicide case

A funeral service took place yesterday for Lionel Desmond and his mother Brenda — and the funeral for his wife Shanna and their 10-year-old daughter Aaliyah will be held today in Tracadie.

Desmond — a former Afghan war veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder — shot the two women and the girl before turning a gun on himself in Upper Big Tracadie last week.

NS dietary concerns

A discrimination case by social assistance recipients over the province’s special diet allowance has been sent back to the Human Rights Commission.

A judge ruled the commission unreasonably dismissed the claim by five women who complained the province hasn’t increased the maximum special diet allowance since 1996.

Applicants can get up to a maximum of $150 a month for health-related dietary needs.
