Aimee Gordon Day in CBRM

Saturday will be Aimee Gordon Day in CBRM to honour the first Cape Breton athlete to win gold at the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

The 46 year from Sydney Mines won the gold medal in the 500 metre speed skating event.  The Cape Breton Post reports Gordon and her coaches Emma Grandy and Cyril MacDonald were presented with keys to the city by Mayor Cecil Clarke.

Saturday there’ll be a free skating event at Centre 200 to celebrate her accomplishments called Skate with Aimee from 1:00 to 3:00.

CBRM report

CBRM council has approved the citizen appointees to the board of the Port of Sydney Development Corporation, according to the cape Breton Post.

The appointees are Elizabeth Brunet, Owen Fitzgerald, Jerry Gillis, John Khattar, John Strasser, John Anderson and Lucia MacIsaac.

Earlier this year, the potential container business was removed from the board’s mandate so it could be led by the private sector.  That leaves the new board’s mandate as mainly the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion, marine terminal, wharf and general marketing of the port of Sydney.
