Cape Breton honours

Two Cape Bretoners have been honoured for heroism.

The late Michelle Curtis of Lingan was awarded the medal of bravery by Governor General David Johnston yesterday.  Curtis died while saving a group of children caught in a riptide off Dunvegan.  Her husband Karl accepted her posthumous award.

Liam Bernard was awarded the Star of Courage for his part in saving two people from a burning camper van after a crash near Melford last September that killed the driver of the other vehicle.

North Sydney hoarder case

Demolition of a hoarder’s house in North Sydney is on hold, according to the CBC.

CBRM ordered the house on Campbell Street torn down as a health, safety and fire hazard in January.  It’s packed with stuff including rotting garbage, animal waste and mould.

The owner, Sylvia Dolomont; was granted several extensions so she could clean up the property.  While a cleanup was started it was not finished.  Now Dolomont has gone to court and won a temporary injunction to halt the demolition.
