CBRM prostitution case

A judge has reserved decision on whether a prostitution sting by Cape Breton Regional Police  last year amounted to entrapment.

Judge Brian Wilson heard arguments from defence and Crown attorneys on the matter after 73 year old John Russell Mercer pleaded guilty to the charge of communicating for the purpose of obtaining sex.  Such an argument can only be raised after a person pleads guilty or is found guilty.

Previously, Judge Wilson rejected a motion that the police sting operation which netted 27 men was an abuse of process.

Trudeau’s Cuban trip

Prime Minister Trudeau was welcomed to Cuba yesterday by its President Raul Castro.

He claimed that the communist island is progressing “as fast as it is able to,” and he warned other countries are undertaking reforms “too quickly” without regard for the needs of their people.

Trudeau stopped in Cuba on the first leg of a trade mission to South America.
