Teachers Job Action Threatens New Waterford’s ‘Coal Bowl’

New Waterford’s 35 year tradition of hosting Atlantic Canada’s largest basketball tournament is in jeopardy. The Coal Bowl is will not be possible under the teachers work-to-rule job action. The tournament, scheduled for February 6th, has grown to attract teams from across Canada. Organizers are hopeful the the teachers union and province come to agreement before mid January when they would likely be forced to cancel the Coal Bowl.

Ski Hills Open Across Nova Scotia

All ski hills in the province enjoyed an early season opening this weekend. Ski Martoch opened Friday, Wentworth opened Saturday, and Cape Breton’s Ben Eion and Cape Smokey also opened for business this weekend. Operators say the early snowfall and cold weather ideal for snow making have the season starting on a positive note.
