CBRM legislation changes

The province is giving CBRM more power over its affairs.

Mayor Cecil Clarke welcomed the Premier’s commitment yesterday to grant a charter to the municipality so it can make decisions on a number of matters with needing the approval of the provincial government.  That includes things such as being able to grant a 99 year lease on land for port development.  Right now, CBRM is limited to granting 20 year leases.

Legislation is expected in the spring.

CBRM suicide rates

There’s been an increase in suicides in Cape Breton.

Todd Vassallo, a psychotherapist in Sydney told the Cape Breton Post there was a 70% spike in suicides from 2014-15; and he believes the numbers will be comprable this year.  Vassallo says this brings up questions about the state of mental health and addictions programs on The Island.
