Picadilly quilter

Mary Ellen Sear of Picadilly has created five quilts to be donated this year to public places to help commemorate the 150th birthday of Canada.

Since she works at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sear is going to donate a quilt for the residents to enjoy.

Local schools and libraries will also get quilts.

Darlings Island flooding

Recently, the Hammond River and Darlings Island Lake overflowed their banks, making the only road to the mainland impassable by car.

People had to cross wearing rubber boots, while others used ATVs; kayaks, canoes, wagons; and even a wheel barrow.

If an emergency occurs, there are boats on standby through other fire departments or the Department of Energy and Resource Development to get additional emergency crews over if required.
