Jean-Guy Rioux passes away

Noted educator and Acadian activist Jean-Guy Rioux has passed away.

Rious died yesterday at the age of 76. He was born in Shippagan, studied at UdeM and then taught and was vice-president at the university’s  Shippagan campus. He was president of the Société de L’Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick for years.

Premier Brian Gallant issued a statement saying Rioux was a passionate champion of education and the Acadian culture not only in New Brunswick but across the country. Rioux was invested into the Order of Canada in 2012 and the Order of New Brunswick in 2016.

Sentencing for child porn and sexual assault

A 21 year old Elsipoktok man has been sentenced to four years after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a minor and child-porn related charges. Billy Ray Peters was given credit for time already spent in custody, leaving him with 40 months still to serve.

Police arrested him after an investigation into online images of child sexual abuse. A second matter involved the sexual assault of a minor and breach of court-ordered conditions.
