Changes coming to property assessment system

Premier Brian Gallant has announced major changes to the property assessment system because of the problems this year. He’s also appointed a former judge to conduct an inquiry into the massive increases in assessments…but he wouldn’t admit that many homeowners were wrongly charged too much on their tax bills.

Gallant told a news conference there is clearly a problem and they are going to fix it.  He said a new independant agency will be established to handle assessments province-wide.

Bank robber pleads guilty

A man, convicted previously of murder, is going to be heading back to prison, according to CBC.

56 year old Michael David Graham of Carleton Street pleaded guilty in court yesterday to robbing the Bayview Credit Union on Loch Lomond Road Friday. He was remanded in custody until a sentencing hearing April 25.

Graham is also being questioned in connection with other recent bank robberies in Saint John.

He has a lengthy criminal record including a conviction for murder in 1980 in Halifax. He was released on parole after 10 years.
