Governments shouldn’t expect tax windfall from grass taxes

A new study by the CD Howe Institute says federal and provincial governments shouldn’t expect an early windfall once marijuana is legalized.

The Institute estimates about $675 million will be generated next year alone just from existing sales tax.  But it warns adding more taxes would just allow the black market to keep flourishing. But there’s quandry…setting prices too low could be seen as encouraging recreational use.

Phillipine militant leader killed

Philippine troops have killed a key commander who was blamed for the beheadings of two Canadians last year.

The Philippines’ military chief says Moammar Askali was killed in a battle with militants in a coastal village on central Bohol island.

The militants kidnapped Canadians John Ridsdel and Robert Hall in 2015 and separately beheaded the Calgary men last year after ransom deadlines lapsed.
