Calls for government-funded special care homes

Seniors’ advocates say there’s a disturbing trend of fee increases in special care homes around the province.

CBC reports the Social Development Department says the special care homes are private businesses.  Cecile Cassista, executive director of the Coalition for Seniors’ and Nursing Home Residents’ Rights, says that needs to change. She wants the government to play a bigger role to protect seniors with publicly-funded special care homes with proper training and proper care for caregivers. There’s a high turnover of caregivers which in turn is very hard on the seniors.

Man rescued from river

Mounties in New Brunswick say a man was injured after his pickup truck went into the St. John River near Perth-Andover.

The driver, a 37 year old man from the Kintore area, managed to escape following yesterday’s crash, and was helped to shore by people who were nearby. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but his dog is believed to have died.
