NS infection concerns

People who have had heart surgery at the QEII or IWK in the last several years are being notified about a risk of infection, about 4,000 patients.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority says devices used to heat and cool blood during heart surgeries have been linked elsewhere to a rare bacterial infection.

Officials say the risk is low, and there have been no reports of infections in our hospitals; but there have been in other parts of North America and Europe, including Montreal.

Trudeau won’t be going to Castro’s funeral in Cuba

Prime Minister Trudeau will not be attending the funeral for Fidel Castro.

Trudeau has been under fire, including in the Commons yesterday; for praising the communist dictator in a statement issued after his death, while not condemning Castro’s human rights record.

Trudeau has said he gets how people with difficult memories of the regime might view things differently, but claims he wasn’t minimizing the serious concerns about human rights.

His office says his schedule won’t permit him to go to the funeral, and the governor general will go in his place.
