Africville lawsuit

Lawyers for former Africville residents have been in court this week arguing in favour of a class-action lawsuit against the city for more compensation for the expropriation of the land for the MacKay bridge.

The 30 residents refused to sign a settlement agreement with the city in 2010 for compensation.  If the suit is certified as a class action, as many as 300 other former residents could sign on.  Their lawyer Robert Pineo says they are suing for loss of communal lands…for the loss of their community…not just their homes.

Hit and run then suspicious fire

Police have been called in to investigate a suspicious fire on Fernhill Road near Windmill early this morning.

Police found a vehicle on fire which the fire department had out quickly.  Once the flames were out they found front end damage as if the car had been in an accident.

A couple of hours earlier there was a hit and run on Windmill Road where a car hit a parked vehicle and took off. Police say there’s no evidenc eyet the two incidents are connected…but they will be considering all possibilities.
