Guilty plea in home invasion

A Moncton man has pleaded guilty to his part in a home invasion last year downtown.

43 year old Shawn Augustine was in court yesterday to plead guilty to being unlawfully in a dwelling house and assault. The Crown dropped more serious charges. He will be sentenced January 9.

Augustine underwent a trial on more serious charges earlier this year, but that ended in a mistrial.

A 50 year old woman was abducted by several men from her Gordon Street home in 2015 and driven to Sackville where she was released unharmed. But then the perpetrators went back to the house and assaulted a 26 year old man who suffered serious injuries.

Man and woman still in hospital after fire

Two people remain in hospital after a fire Monday in a house on Church Street.

A couple from a basement apartment of the house are in the intensive care unit with smoke inhalation and burns.

The fire department has deemed the cause to be accidental.
