Minister speaks about assault charge

The husband of Immigration Minister Lena Diab has been released on bail with orders to stay away from the family. Maroun Diab will be back in court February to answer to the assault and other charges he’s facing after an incident New Year’s Eve in the family’s home.

Lena Diab spoke briefly to reporters yesterday about the incident thanking the community for its support and calling it a very tragic, sad, private and personal matter. She didn’t answer any questions.

Teachers won’t write reference letters

The Teachers Union and the province are getting ready to go back to the bargaining table next week to try to settle their contract dispute. Concilliation talks are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, the work to rule campaign continues…and one of the effects could be on students seeking university scholarships. The Teachers union has directed its members not to write reference letters for those students. So universities and colleges in the province are considering whether to drop the reference letter requirement.
