The province will introduce legislation this week to enhance animal protection. Amendments would increase penalties for fighting contests, improper tethering and failing to humanely euthanize, among other things. There would also be a new offence for abandonment, and liability protection for those involved in animal protection. The New Brunswick SPCA is also getting $100,000 for annual funding.

House fires
RCMP are investigating fires in three vacant houses late Saturday night.
Codiac RCMP said the fire is considered suspicious. No one was hurt.
The fire started in one home which was undergoing renovations and then spread to neighbouring houses.
