Canada’s last destroyer is retiring

HMCS Athabaskan made its final circuit of Halifax harbour yesterday with former crew and others aboard. It fired its big forward gun for the last night. There’ll be a final paying off ceremony tomorrow at the Dockyard.

The Athabaskan is the last of the Navy’s destroyers, built in the early 1070s it had many high profile missions including the Pwersian Gulf War in 1990-91 and helping with recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina on the U-S Gulf Coast.

Liberal MPs vote against their government on a bill

Liberal backbenchers joined Conservatives and New Democrats to shoot down a bill that bars Health and life insurance companies from forcing clients to disclose any genetic testing results.

The backbenchers went against the wishes of Prime Minister Trudeau who said the government had to defend the constitution and that the bill intruded on provincial jurisctions.
