More operating suites for Dumont hospital

Health Minister Victor Boudreau was in town yesterday to announce a major expansion of the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre.

Over $21 million will be spent adding nine new operating rooms and other facilities in an expansion on the north end of the hospital.

There are long wait times for surgeries in this area and the operating rooms should help reduce those. He also noted a lot of people are moving to the greater Moncton area so they need to make sure they have enough qualified staff and the right facilities.

Doctor shortage

The province is short 70 doctors and Health Minister Victor Boudreau says the government is actively recruiting across Canada.

Of those 70 doctors, 11 are in the Moncton area.

Boudreau told the Times and Transcript part of the problem is the aging population because doctors are aging too, with more and more of them retiring.
