The newest member of Moncton City Council will be Susan Edgett.

Edgett managed to beat Paul Richard by 20 votes last night in the by-election in Ward 4. Two other candidates finished well back of them.

The seat became vacant with the death of long-time councillor Rene “Pepsi” Landry in August.

A young woman, facing a murder charge here, is now facing an assault charge involving a correctional officer.

Marissa June Shephard was in court in Miramichi yesterday charged with assaulting a guard at the New Brunswick Women’s Correctional Centre  July 28. The case was adjourned until November 28th to give her lawyer more time to go over the evidence.

Shephard is in custody awaiting trial on first-degree murder and arson charges next year in Baylie Wylie’s death. Her preliminary hearing is set for March.
