Mactaquac will be refurbished

NB Power says the Mactaquac generating station will remain operational until 2068.

The utility had considered decommissioning the 670 megawatt dam by 2030 because of failing concrete. However it says a $3.6 billion project to fix the concrete and extend the life of the dam makes better business sense.

The New Brunswick Salmon Council had called for the removal of the dam to free the river flow. Area residents, on the other hand, said the headpond helps tourism in the area.

Government issues advisory on E-R visits during holidays

The government is urging people to consider alternatives to emergency rooms over the holidays.

It says most pharmacies and doctors’ offices are on reduced hours or closed through the holidays. That causes more people to go to E-Rs looking for relief. The province say that can tie up health-care resources.

It says people should try to see their doctor before the weekend if they have developing health-care needs, use on-call services or go to a walk-in clinic.
