NB VIA Rail plans

Officials in New Brunswick are hoping to get a good chunk of the 867 million dollars from the feds announced for improvements to passenger rail service.

VIA may establish daily service between Campbellton and Moncton, along with a daily Moncton-to-Halifax run that would be in addition to the long-range Ocean train that goes three times a week between Montreal and Halifax.

A major problem with that is the condition of a 70-kilometre swath of track between Miramichi and Bathurst that cannot handle passenger trains travelling at high speeds.

That means a one-way trip from Moncton to Campbellton takes six hours compared to a little over three hours by car.

Beginning Thursday March 30th; the Miramichi Rivermen will be hosting the Major Midget Atlantic Championship at the Miramichi Civic Centre.  You can get tickets at the Newcastle Pizza Delight, the Portage Restaurant; and all Miramichi Petro Canada’s.

In the Q-League playoffs, the Mooseheads were shut down 2-0 by the Huskies who now have a two game to one lead.  The Islanders beat the Drakkar 3-1 for their third straight win.  The Screaming Eagles got past Gatineau  5-2 for their third straight win.  The Sea Dogs topped Rimouski 5-2 for their third straight win.

On the hardwood, the Saint John Riptide ripped the Highlanders 133-105 at Centre 200.

In NHL action, it was the Leafs over the Panthers 3 to 2.

The Habs beat the Stars 4 to 1.

The Flyers got past the Sens 3 to 2.

The Jets beat the Devils 4 to 3.

It was the Oilers over the Kings 2 to 1.

Anaheim beat the Canucks 4 to 1.
