Fishermen’s Memorial

Dozens of families turned out yesterday at the Fishermen’s Memorial in Shelburne to honour those who have died at sea.

CBC reports the first names etched on the stones on that monument James F. Demings and William H. Demings, who died at sea on Jan. 5, 1856. The final name is Jim Buchanan who went overboard last January.

There were prayers and music. Then family members tossed flowers on the waves in memory of lost loved ones.

Davis Day Memorial

Hundreds of people turned out at the Miner’s Museum in Glace Bay for the Davis Day Memorial.

Davis’ great-grandson Sheldon MacDonald and his family attended the ceremony on behalf of the family of the man killed by coal company cops during a strike in 1925.

MacDonald told the Cape Breton Post he thinks Davis really is the face of miners…the name to put to all of the miners and all of the struggles they went through over the years.
