Trouble at the Legion in Clare

The Clare Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion apparently isn’t anymore….and all because of $300.

CBC reports members of Clare Branch #52 in Saulnierville refused to send the provincial command of the legion a small share of the money it collects selling poppies for the past two years. Russell Comeau, who was the local service officer in Clare, says members didn’t feel the provincial command supported or provided any services in their area. They just said send us your money…so the local members said no.

Now the Royal Canadian Legion has withdrawn the branch’s charter.

Deadly First Nation fire

The Oneida First Nation near London, Ontario, says five members of a family are feared dead after fire raged through their home. The victims are believed to be a father and four of his young children, one of them a baby.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett issued a statement saying she was deeply saddened by the loss of life.

Chief Randall Phillips says First Nation housing is in crisis. He’s critical of the federal government for rejecting a proposal for federal funds to repair 50 local homes there.
