Big layoffs at the dairies

The dairy industry in the Maritimes is being hit hard by layoffs. Agropur and Saputo, both based in Quebec, are laying off almost 350 people beginning April 1.

The two companies say they are realigning their sales and merchandising structure. Stores will now be responsible for putting the milk in the coolers after its delivered.

In recent years, Agropur has bought out Farmers and Scotsburn dairies among others in the Maritimes.

Judge sends complaint over food allowance back to Human Rights Commission

A discrimination case by social assistance recipients over the province’s special diet allowance has been sent back to the Human Rights Commission.

A judge ruled the commission unreasonably dismissed the claim by five women who complained the province hasn’t increased the maximum special diet allowance since 1996. Applicants can get up to a maximum of $150 a month for health-related dietary needs.
