Safety on fishing boats

The Transportation Safety Board has released a report into the drowning of a fisherman off Clark’s Harbour in 2015.

The crew was setting lobster traps on the opening day of the season when a deckhand’s feet got caught trying to free ropes on a trap and he was hauled overboard.  The TSB says the fishing industry has issues with unsafe operating practices and crew training nationwide. It’s recommending captains run regular safety drills for their crews to prevent such accidents from happening.

Calls to raise smoking age

British Columbia is considering raising the smoking age there to 21. Proponents say the longer people are prevented from buying cigarettes legally the better the odds they won’t get the habit.

All the provinces have smoking ages now of 18 or 19.
