Campbellton VIA Rail lobby group

Campbellton’s Jane Van Horne has been appointed to the Transport Action Atlantic board that wants to improve passenger train service in the Maritimes.

The Ocean, which runs from Halifax to Montreal; used to run six days a week, but has been cut back to three days as the former CEO of VIA Rail believed it would be more cost-effective.

But, officials contend the line is costing more because revenues have dropped and expenses did not go down as fast as the revenues.

Campbellton and Miramichi salmon concerns

Greenland says it won’t stop harvesting Atlantic salmon, despite a request by scientific experts at international meetings.

That country says it will harvest as much as 14,000 large salmon this year, many of them from endangered runs such as the rivers in the Campbellton and Miramichi areas.

Due to dwindling numbers of fish, the feds have banned anglers from keeping young salmon caught in the Gulf of St. Lawrence region; for three seasons straight.
