Province looking at mandatory life-jackets for fishermen

Labour minister Donald Arsenault is considering a recommendation by the Transportation Safety Board to make life-jackets mandatory aboard commercial fishing boats.

Arseneault says he has asked senior staff to reach out to stakeholders, like the Maritime Fishermen’s Union, for opinions.  New Brunswick and PEI are the only provinces that don’t include commersial fishing under Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

The life-jacket recommendation came in a report yesterday on the capsizing of a fishing vessel off Bathurst last year which left two of three crewman dead when their fishing boat capsized.
