“Unfounded” sexual assault complaints confirmed

Saint John Police have finished a review of more than 360 sexual assault complaints which were deemed unfounded by the officers who investigated.

A Globe & Mail investigation revealed that Saint John police had the highest “unfounded” rate in Canada between 2010 and 2014 at 51%.

Police Chief John Bates appointed Sgt. Debbie Easton to review all the files and she has determined not one required re-investigation or that the initial investigation was substandard. Chief Bates told CBC there are no plans to change the way officers investigate future complaints of sexual violence.
