Recently, a special welcome home celebration took place at the Elders’ Lodge in Listuguj for those who survived residential schools.
It also marked the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Shubenacadie Residential School in Nova Scotia, which local First Nations children had to go to.
The schools were used to assimilate Indigenous children into a non-native culture.
The kids were humiliated including beatings that led to the deaths of many First Nation children.
There were 47 children from Listuguj and the Eel River Bar First Nation who were stolen from their homes and sent to a residential school, according to The Tribune.
