Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board layoffs

The union representing some 11-hundred employees at the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board says 28 education workers face layoffs this week.

CUPE Local 5050 told The Canadian Press 23 teaching assistants, two secretaries and three cleaners have received pink slips.

A bus driver and an inventory clerk position have also been lost through attrition.

Union local president Mary Jessome says the decision comes as board members recently voted to increase their own wages by around 40-thousand dollars.
