Government reaction to sex assault case

Premier Stephen McNeil said he is angry about the decision in the sex assault case involving a cab driver. McNeil says the benchmark for consent under the Criminal Code needs to be reviewed.

Justice Minister Diana Whalen says she wants the justice system’s response to sexual assault complaints to be a priority item at the next meeting of the country’s justice ministers. Whalen is also promising other changes to help sexual assault victims, including the hiring of two special prosecutors to handle such cases and specialized training for Crown attorneys.
