Credit checks for free tuitions criticized

The province admits it is running credit checks on people applying for the free tuitions…but says it doesn’t track the number.

Post-secondary Education department officials told Brunswick News the credit checks are not specific to the free tuition program…but are a blanket step used as part of eligibility requirements for all student assistance. They did confirm the credit checks have resulted in some applicants being turned down but didn’t give a number.

The Conservatives are critical saying it’s free money…people don’t have to pay it back…and maintaining the practise makes no sense.
