Legislature to emergency reconvene to impose contract on teachers

The legislature is due to convene tonight in an emergency session to legislate a contract settlement on the teachers.

Premier Stephen McNeil released a statement Saturday saying his government will table legislation that will bring an end to this dispute as soon as possible. Teachers Union president Liette Doucet warned the premier’s announcement would just further erode trust between teachers and the government.

Conservative leader Jamie Baillie issued a release last night criticizing the premier for not cancelling the legislative session because of the storm, even though government offices are closed. He says there’s no emergency facing students that warrants the safety risks to legislature staff with opening Province House tonight.
