A move is underway to change some place names in Saint John including Negro Point and Negro Head.
Ralph Thomas of PRUDE says those names are a reminder of the province’s racist heritage and should be changed. He says many people are uncomfortable using the word…and in some communities some people still use the other “N” word. Thomas would like to see the point where the breakwater leads out to Partridge Island renamed Hodges Point to reflect the history of the Hodges family….black loyalists who moved here after the American revolution.
The province has already started to change similiar names around the province.
