Sydney murder trial finally set after many delays

A Glace Bay man will go to trial in April in the death of 21 year old Laura Catherine Jessome whose remains were found in a hockey bag in the Mira River in 2012.

Setting a date for the trial of 41 year old Thomas Ted Barrett was delayed several times because he had trouble finding a lawyer to represent him. He’s already serving a life sentence for killing Brett Elizabeth MacKinnon in 2006.

A co-accused in the Jessome case, Morgan James McNeil, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in September and was sentenced to seven years. Robert Edwin Matheson got 3½ years for helping to dispose of the body.
