Cape Breton Regional Council gave the go ahead to port development plans yesterday but it wasn’t unanimous. Some councillors objected to the speed with which this is being pushed through by the Mayor, according to CBC.
In the end though, they were outnumbered by councillors saying yes to extending Sydney Harbour Investment Partners contract to manage the container terminal development for another five years. Council also approved a request to be sent to the provincial government which would allow CBRM to offer a 99 year lease of the site or sell it for $10 million. Clarke said those kinds of assurances are needed for the developers to move on to detailed project costings, engineering and other work.
