Premier Brian Gallant says he was saddened to learn of the death of former MLA Shorley Dysart. He called her was one of the province’s most important political figures of the 20th century.
Gallant says Shirley Dysart consistently shattered glass ceilings for women in politics. She was the province’s first female leader of the Official Opposition, serving as interim Liberal leader in 1985, then the first female education minister in 1987 and finally the first woman to become Speaker of the legislature in 1991.
