Regional Council has unanimously passed a plan which it hopes will add up to 3,000 affordable homes to the private-sector housing market over the next five years. It wants to preserve and renovate another 2,000.
The targets are part of the city’s plan to tackle the growing gap between income and housing costs in the city. The province has the mandate to subsidize public housing, but the city wants to leverage development rules to encourage the private sector to build affordable housing as well.
