Moncton City Council has decided to keep the name of Rene-Arthur Frechet Park in Sunny Brae, according to the Times and Transcript.
Some local residents wanted the park’s name changed to better reflect the Scottish roots of the neighbourhood…and because not many people knew who Frechet was. He was a noted architect early in the 20th century who designed many of the city’s most iconic buildings including the Capitol Theatre and Castle Manor.
Councillor Paulette Theriault said it’s important for the city to keep the park’s name as is because they don’t want to set a precedent over changing names because it could cause a backlash. After the name change efffort began, she says she got a lot of requests from people who wanted to keep the name.
