Premier apologizing to Mi’kmaq

Premier Stephen McNeil will meet with Mi’kmaq chiefs today to apologize.

A government legal brief, in connection with the Alton gas project, implied members of a First Nation band were conquered people. McNeil said he will apologize saying the brief didn’t reflect who he is or the belief of his government.

The brief said the Crown’s obligation to consult the Indian Brook band extended only to “unconquered people”.
