Nova Scotia exempted from federal coal phase out deadline

A new federal timetable to phase out coal-fired electrical generation in Canada by 2030 includes an exemption for Nova Scotia.

Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna says the agreement gives the province the flexibility it needs to shift directly from fossil fuels to clean sources of electricity. It also recognizes work the province has already done to reduce greenhouse gases.

Provincial officials said they can’t provide the economic impact on consumers yet.
