Ceremonies were held yesterday to dedicate the The Great Trail’s Bras d’Or Lakes Water Route.
People gathered in Iona as part of the Oceans Day Festival to mark the opening of the 377 kilometre Bras d’Or Lakes Water Route which is part of the Trans-Canada trail, and follows the perimetre of the Bras D’Or. Blaise MacEachern, chair of the Nova Scotia Trans Canada Trail Committee; called it a true keystone for both Nova Scotia and The Great Trail.
Canoe and portage routes around the lake date back thousands of years for the Mi’Kmaq. Water access points along the route provide paddlers with a launch area and staging, washrooms, changing facilities, and paddling gear storage areas.
