CBU talks

The administration and faculty at Cape Breton University sat down for about four hours yesterday to try to avoid a strike next week.

Neither side is saying anything about the negotiations, but the Faculty Association has said if there’s no settlement by late this afternoon it will give 48 hours strike notice tomorrow and there won’t be any classes Monday.

The two sides are fighting over a layoff clause.

Port funding announcement

The port is expected to get more money next week to build a second berth for cruise ships.

Sources told the Cape Breton Post the announcement is expected Monday or Tuesday.  The Mayor’s office is just saying we can expect very good news for the community.

CBRM already committed to its one-third share of the $20 million cost in it’s last budget.  It’s just been waiting on the province and Ottawa.
