Robbery suspect in court

A 58-year-old Sydney Mines woman is in Sydney Provincial Court today, facing charges for two armed robberies yesterday afternoon.

Cape Breton Regional Police were called to a residence on King Street in Sydney Mines at approximately 2:00 PM, where a female resident reported another female had come to her door with a weapon, demanding money and then ran away towards Main Street. While on scene, police received reports of a second armed robbery at a business on Main Street. Within moments, police located a woman matching the suspect description running up King Street with a knife and quickly placed her under arrest.

Layoff notices from Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board

28 education workers received layoff notices this week from their employer, the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board (CBVRSB). The workers, who are members of CUPE Local 5050, include 23 teaching assistants, two secretaries, two supervisor cleaners and one cleaner. A bus driver and an inventory clerk position were also lost through attrition.
