Moose cull protest

About half a dozen protestors blocked a road the Cabot Trail leading into Cape Breton Highlands National Park Saturday.

They were protesting the bull of moose by Mi’Kmaq hunters.  Organizer Dennis Day told CBC they feel the park should be a sanctuary not a slaughterhouse.

Parks Canada has said research shows the moose population in the park is about 1,800 and hastening vegetation loss in the forests.

Northside Downs incident

Three drivers were sent to hospital as the harness racing season came to a terrifying close at Northside Downs in North Sydney on Saturday.

Drivers Danny Campbell, Roddy Hurley and John Beaton were injured in the collision and taken to hospital.  Beaton was reportedly airlifted to hospital in Halifax.

The horses involved in the collision suffered only minor injuries.
