NS long-term care concerns

Opposition critics are concerned about a $8.2 million cut in funding for long-term care homes.

Conservative MLA Tim Houston told a legislature committee some homes are having difficulty meeting the cuts without harming services for vulnerable Nova Scotians.

The NDP’s Dave Wilson doesn’t understand why the cutbacks had to be passed on to front-line caregivers already struggling to meet needs.

Deputy health minister Peter Vaughan says the cutbacks will affect 103 out of 134 facilities and the government is working with some of the them to help them cope.

Canadian aid to New Zealand

A Canadian frigate is helping with recovery efforts after the earthquake in New Zealand.

HMCS Vancouver was one of many ships visiting New Zealand this week as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of its navy.

The Vancouver arrived off Kaikoura on the south island yesterday and will help in humanitarian efforts in the resort town which has been cut off from the rest of the country.

It’ll join American warships in re-stocking the town with water, fuel; and other supplies.
