An apology to Mi’kmaw chiefs

Premier Stephen McNeil apologized to Mi’kmaw chiefs yesterday for words in a government legal brief which infered members of a First Nation band were a conquered people.

Justice Minister Diana Whalen says her officials are also investigating how the term got in the document used in court in the Alton Gas protest case.

She wouldn’t say if there’s been any discipline for the lawyer who presented the brief in court.

Possible Nova Scotia bank note connection

A woman who fought racial discrimination in Nova Scotia is on a short list of those whose image could appear on the next series of Canadian bank notes.

Viola Desmond is among five women being considered for the new notes due out in 2018.
