Mayflower Mall project with police

Some kids went Christmas shopping at the Mayflower Mall yesterday with the help of Cape Breton Regional Police officers.

The 48 elementary students from various schools were paired with officers to help them spend $300 each on gifts.  The money came from the Mayflower Mall and local businessmen Joe Anthony of A&L Seafoods, Jim Kennedy of Louisbourg Seafood Limited and John Wilcox of Argen Fisheries.  Sportcheck also provided each student with a new winter jacket.

The police were happy to see the kids spending their money on gifts for other people and not themselves.

Nova Scotia refugee plans

The Community Services Department will be hiring an Arabic-speaking case worker to help with an expected influx of Syrian Refugees whose federal taxpayer’s support will expire next year.

Minister Joanne Bernard says her department wants to be ready for that when Ottawa’s support ends 12 months after each family arrives.

There are about 1,300 Syrian refugees who have come to Nova Scotia since last December.
