Mira River murder case

A Glace Bay man will go to trial in April in the death of 21 year old Laura Catherine Jessome whose remains were found in a hockey bag in the Mira River in 2012.

Setting a date for the trial of 41 year old Thomas Ted Barrett was delayted several times because he had trouble fuinding a lawyers to represent him. He’s already serving a life sentence for killing Elizabeth MacKinnon in 2006.

A co-accused in the Jessome case, Morgan James McNeil, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in September and was sentenced to seven years. Robert Edwin Matheson got 3½ years for helping to dispose of the body.

Scotchtown cleanup

The cleanup continues at the coal train deraiment site in Scotchtown.

Sydney Coal Railway says it’ll be at least Sunday before the debris and coal are cleaned up and repairs made to the tracks. Six cars delrailed as they were hauling coal to the Lingan power station. The investigation into the cause also continues.
